“Austin, can you give us more information about the status of your foot injury?” a reporter asks me. “Commentators noticed you favoring one foot during your bout with Smith Salazar.”

FI likes to hold these media shitshows they call press conferences after a fight to drum up drama or whatever bullshit is necessary for the next one. As the champion of my division, I’m required to go, and often, I have to answer questions like this, or even worse.

“My foot’s been fully healed for years,” I say, keeping my hands folded on the table and ignoring the way the third-ranked fighter in my division, Max Davies, is looking at me with a smug look on his face. “I’ve done all the rehab necessary for it and it isn’t affecting my training. That’s kind of how I defended my title. Again.”

Cameras click in front of me as the reporters turn their attention to Max. I zone out since I don’t want to hear him talking himself up, as if he’s anywhere near as good as I am.

Just because I hate these press conferences doesn’t mean that I’m bad at them. I keep my expression calm and collected even though inside, I’m raging. The fight was ten days ago and I wasn’t injured in the ring. Why do they keep bringing this shit up?

I try not to think about watching my footage the other night. Of course they’re bringing it up again — it’s easy to see that I wasn’t at my best, even though I won easily.

“If you don’t get to challenge Austin in the near future, who do you want to take on?” a reporter with a grating voice asks Max. “Rumors have it that Jean Augustin has been calling you out, especially since you’ve been seen around town with his ex-girlfriend, Nina Aubert.”

Yet another irritating thing about Nathan — he loves pitting fighters against each other in ways that aren’t related to the sport. If someone wants to talk shit about my fighting, fine. But rumors about who I like and hate, or who’s hooking up with whose girl? Bullshit.

“Those are just rumors,” Max says, his voice flat. For a moment, I feel for him. At least I’ve guarded my personal life as closely as I can so I don’t get questions about who I’m fucking. “And while I’d like to fight Jean to show him just how good I am, I’d prefer to take on Austin. I’d take a belt over anything else, any day. I know I can win it, especially now.”

My feelings of sympathy towards Max dry up instantly.

“Why, because you think I’m injured?” I ask.

“Did I mention that?” Max shoots back. “Or are you just projecting your own shit onto me?”

“I’m just saying that you seem like you’ve got a lot of confidence for someone who turned down a fight with me not long ago. Now you think you have a chance? You don’t.”

I look back out onto the audience, hoping I’ve shut him up. He
